Ontario's roads drive business
- Ontario has an extensive 16,525 centreline kilometres of highway in the provincial network. Placed end-to-end, Ontario's highways would span Canada twice. Municipal Highway Transfers total 4,976 kilometres and there are 94 highways that make up the provincial system. Ontario has an extensive 72,347 km network of paved roads and freeways.
- Controlled-access freeways (four lanes or more) carry more than half of all vehicle traffic.
- Advanced freeway traffic management systems improve the efficiency of the highway system and increase road safety.
- 80% of the value of Ontario’s trade with the United States moves by truck.
- Annually, US$1.1 trillion worth of goods are transported on provincial highways.
