Ontario’s commitment to tomorrow’s leaders

The Ontario government is committed to student success

The provincial government supports new and innovative programs to ensure that secondary students in Ontario are given the opportunity to succeed in high school, right through to graduation.

Over the past two years, the high school graduation rate increased by five percentage points, which means 12,000 more students earned their high school diploma. Increased graduation rates translate into a stronger Ontario economy, and a more competitive skilled labour force.

Six programs have been implemented to help students continue with their education:

  • Student success teams – dedicated team that provides extra attention and support when needed
  • Expanded co-op credit – students can now earn two compulsory high school credits through hands-on work experience
  • Specialist High Skills Major – lets students ‘bundle’ courses to prepare for specific academic or skilled careers
  • Dual Credit Program – students can earn credits and put them towards both their high school diploma and their post-secondary diploma, degree, or apprenticeship certification
  • Lighthouse Projects – local programs help students stay in school by providing guidance, support, and alternative learning environments
  • Grade 8-9 Transition – high school transition plan for Grade 8 and 9 students
