Smaller class sizes help foster better learning

Percentage of Primary (JK-Grade 3) Classes

The provincial government has undertaken a program to reduce and limit class sized in publicly-funded primary schools across the province, by increasing funding for new teachers and new classrooms. In the 2006/07 school year, 65% of primary school classes had 20 or fewer students. The goal of this program is for 90 per cent of primary classrooms to have 20 students or fewer, with the remaining classrooms to have no more than 23 students.

Students At or Above the Standard

Since the government has implemented the initiative for smaller class sizes, test scores are improving, with an increasing number of students meeting or exceeding the provincial standard in reading, writing and math tests.
