R&D Profile

Total spending on R&D in Canada by Performing and Funding Sectors


In 2006, Gross Domestic Expenditures on research and development (GERD) for Canada was estimated* at Cdn$28.35 billion. GERD includes R&D performed and funded from all sources, including governments, business enterprises, non-profit organizations, higher education institutions and foreign sources, but excludes payments sent abroad for R&D performed in other countries.

Funding Sectors

In 2006, business enterprises are expected to account for Cdn$13.2 billion (or 47%) of the total funding for R&D in Canada. The federal government is projected to be the second largest funder of R&D accounting for Cdn$5.2 billion (18%) of the total funding of R&D. Foreign sources are expected to be the fifth largest source of funds for R&D in Canada, which financed Cdn$2.4 billion (8.5%) of the estimated total intramural R&D in 2006.
