R&D Profile
Total spending on R&D in Canada continues to increase through 2006
Gross Domestic Expenditure on Research and Development (GERD) represents total research and development (R&D) expenditures performed in a country’s national territory during a given year. Preliminary estimates for GERD in 2006 suggest that this indicator will continue to grow at a modest pace. Total spending on R&D in Canada is expected to amount to Cdn$28.4 billion dollars in 2006, a 4.4% increase over the figures for 2005 (Cdn$27.2 billion). In 2006, a Cdn$990 million increase in expenditure on R&D by higher education institutions is expected to account for most of the estimated growth in GERD in that year.
