Ford's Oakville, Ontario fuel cell R&D centre is hard at work on what will be the world's first large scale application of the company's innovative fumes-to-fuel technology. The researchers have come up with a novel way to capture volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and convert them into hydrogen-rich fuel using a large-scale stationary fuel cell, with the resulting energy being used to power parts of the plant. It represents a huge leap forward from standard industry practice, which is to capture and incinerate solvent fumes, a process that consumes millions of cubic feet of natural gas a year and results in combustion emissions.
