The Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) is the major Canadian stock market. In 2006, it saw a trading value of almost $1.5 trillion. It ranked 4th globally in capital raised by share issues, 5th in the value of exchange-traded funds, and 7th in domestic market capitalization.

The TSX Venture Exchange is the primary market for emerging companies in Canada, assisting junior companies to enter the market. In 2006, it facilitated trading to a value of $33 billion, and graduated 67 listings to the Toronto Stock Exchange. These were predominantly mining companies, followed by oil & gas and biotechnology firms.

Canada’s mutual fund industry has quadrupled in size since 1995, and now manages $699.7 billion of investments. $400 billion of this is managed by firms headquartered in Ontario. Eight of the top ten mutual fund firms operating in Canada are based in Toronto, and account for over $370 billion of the Canadian industry’s total.

The investment sector employed almost 41,000 people in Canada in 2006.

Securities firms in Canada are regulated by provincial bodies. A consortium of these, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), harmonizes their activities and coordinates Canadian and foreign regulatory activities. CSA also hosts a database of publicly-traded companies, and their trading activities. The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) regulates securities firms in Ontario.
